As opposed to the religious culture in the Philippines, we don’t need to light candles on Votive candle holders to make our prayers more effective and powerful. It is not a matter of the externals, like crawling to the altar, praying face down on the floor or other acts but it is a matter of what is in our hearts. This is not to say that it is wrong to do such acts, but just to qualify the acts by first making sure that our hearts are right with God – having the right motive, asking according to God’s will and coming before Him blameless.

The periodicals are here again. Most of the young people in our center are now stressed out with the ever growing demands of school requirements from papers to the tons of tasks they would have to submit before deadline. Normally, young people in their age range won’t really need any of those energy pills, but there are just days that they could really use one. Recharge inside and out is really the key. Otherwise burnout is inevitable. Just press on and do what is required. Study well. This too shall come to pass. God bless you all as you take those mind boggling exams.

The Essence of Leadership

Servanthood is the essence of true leadership. As a leader it may mean being willing to get your hands dirty, sweeping the floor, moving boxes or arranging chairs.

Just take a look at Jesus’ examples. He was born in a manger, He grew up as carpenter’s son, He wasn’t from a very influential family. He associated with lowly people and helped them. When He gained influence and the people looked to Him to be a powerful and mighty deliverer form the hands of the Romans, He entered Jerusalem on a donkey and showed humility. His greatest show of humility was dying on a cross for us.

“Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8

Like our spiritual health, we should also keep our physical health in check. It is being a good steward of the physical body that is give us. We really can’t take our health for granted and not pay for it. Not just to make sure you don’t have deadly diseases like pneumonia or mesothelioma. To say the obvious, if a person chooses, this will sooner or later take its toll on his respiratory health. This should be considered by the youth of today who are enticed by the false image of being cool when they do certain things like smoking. Always keep your health in check.

Finding God’s Grace During Our Time of Weakness

Isaiah 65:25 “The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.”

The Word of God holds a lot of promise to those whose faith are in Him. Even during the time of Israel’s willful disobedience, yes, there were consequences to their sin, but God never stopped sending words of promise to those who will repent and these were sent through His prophets.

The passage above is just one of those many passages. This doesn’t necessarily have to be taken literally to say that time will come when animals will become tame, like aggression in dogs will be gone, or the wild instincts of predatory animals will be gone. This may be pertaining to repentance – the change of heart of people who have been aggressive toward God, more particularly His people who have willfully disobeyed Him.

It is amazing that God, even in our moments of weakness and foolishness, still looks forward to our restoration. May these words be a reminder for us about God’s grace and faithfulness.

This was taken in one of the beaches we went to after going to four schools and presenting the program to at least 1,300 students. We appreciate Pastor Dave Quiocson for being a great host during this missions trip.

Memorize to Meditate

Psalm 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.”

God gives many promises of blessing for those who keep His word. Meditating Scripture is one of the ways we stay on the word of God. But, before we can meditate, we need to memorize verses upon verses so that when we meditate, we just pull out from our brain’s compact flash drive the verses we have memorized. Meditation isn’t necessarily just an irrelevant religious practice. We can do it when we feel down, when we feel discouraged, when we feel scared and just meditate on the verse that is appropriate for the moment.
